[COVID-19] Useful info when visiting Salou & the Costa Daurada

A short guide to what you need to know before travelling to Salou and the Costa Daurada during the summer of coronavirus. Including when to wear a mask.

2020 has been unlike any other year with COVID-19 affecting people all over the world. Back in March, Spain had one of the highest rates of coronavirus. For a period of 7 weeks, citizens were quarantined at home. From that point, the situation has improved and on 18th June, the ‘new normal’ phase was declared.

People have given a lot to reach this point and since the borders opened on the 1st July, Salou and the Costa Daurada have been ready to accept their much-loved tourists back to the shores of the Mediterranean. So how can you keep yourself and others safe whilst on holiday this summer?

The 4 key things to remember are:

  • Wear a mask
  • Wash your hands
  • Keep a distance of 1.5 metres
  • Choose to be outside where possible

Wear a mask

It is compulsory to wear a face mask which covers both your nose and mouth when you leave your place of residence e.g. hotel room, apartment etc. This means as you are walking around outside, visiting shops, or taking transport, you must wear your mask. Even if there is no-one else around you. You are allowed to remove your mask when you need to do an activity that you cannot do with a mask.

You can remove your mask:

  • If you are practising sport or exercising. Remember you need to wear a mask if you have to walk to the area where you want to exercise.
  • After you have found your space on the beach. You do not need to wear a mask in the water or when you are sunbathing. If you need to walk to the bar or toilet, you should put your mask back on. If you decide to take a walk along the beach you should wear your mask too. The rules regarding swimming pools can vary so you should check with your hotel.
  • When you arrive at your table in a bar or restaurant. You do not need to wear a mask when you are eating or drinking. However, you should put your mask on if you have to move from the table e.g to go to the toilet.

You do not need to wear a mask;

  • If you are less than 6 years old.
  • If you have breathing difficulties.
  • If you have a disability which means you cannot be responsible for putting on your own mask.

You might be fined if you are not wearing a mask at the correct time.

Wash your hands

Considered to be the most effective way of avoiding the virus, you should wash your hands frequently throughout the day. You will notice that in almost all the restaurants and shops there are hand sanitisers at the entrance. Be sure to use it to keep yourself and others safe.

Keep a distance of 1.5 metres

When visiting shops, common areas in your hotel, and walking down the street, you should keep a distance of 1.5 metres from others. You will see that the space between tables in restaurants and bars allows for greater distance between you and the other customers too. Additionally, when choosing a spot on the beach you should choose an area of 2.5m²  from the people next to you.

Choose to be outside where possible

The ideal climate of Salou and the Costa Daurada means it is easy to spend the majority of your stay outside. Whether sunbathing on the beach, enjoying a drink at sunset or trying some delicious tapas in an outside terrace. After a difficult year for everyone, tourists are welcomed with open arms. Or rather, an elbow tap, as is the recommended way to greet someone!

Salou and the Costa Daurada are perfectly safe to visit this summer. The coronavirus pandemic means it might be a little different this year. However, visiting now means you will benefit from a quieter atmosphere that you might never experience again. Just remember, respect the rules, wear your mask and enjoy your holiday!
