There is nowhere more authentic to discover the area than the small town of Porrera. With a population of just 450 inhabitants, there are 25 wineries and a wine a culture going back centuries.  Follow our guide below to create the perfect visit to this area.

A guided walk along the vineyards

The rural house La Caseta del Priorat organises tours of the vineyards to discover where the story of your wine begins. From the town square, a local guide takes you by van to the rural paths in the mountain ridges above, surrounded by fields of vineyards. From the top of the mountain, you can see spectacular views of the Montsant mountain range and the captivating landscape of the region.

On the way the guide shares his knowledge, explaining the high slate content in the soil, the plague of phylloxera in the early 19th century which destroyed everything, to the recovery of production just 30 years ago.

The trip ends at the shrine of Sant Antoni on a hill overlooking Porrera. The town is then reached after a short walk through fields of centuries-old vines, strengthened by the steep terrain prepared by peasants more than a hundred years ago. This two-hour route designed for small groups combines a passion for the land and a local knowledge that creates a unique experience.

A great wine tasting

No trip to Priorat is complete without a traditional wine tasting. In the main square of the town hidden through a rustic rural house, the guide will show you his family cellar which opens out to a beautiful walled garden. A tasting of carefully chosen wines and handmade liqueurs will commence. Moving through white, red, rose, vermouth, dessert wine and muscat, all originating from the vineyards visited earlier. In addition the wines are complemented with snacks including a taste of the local DO Siurana olive oil.

Proper rural food

After tasting a variety of delicious wines you will be in need of something to eat. There is La Cooperativa a traditional restaurant full of local ingredients. On the other hand there is El Rebost de Can Carlets with competitive prices and a cosy atmosphere. Wherever you choose all the restaurants in the area offer the prized DOQ Priorat wine.

Adrenaline with Vies Altes

Before returning home, get an alternative view of the landscape of Priorat with Vies Altas zipline adventure park. Just outside of Porrera this natural location has 5 circuits with different difficulties, an obstacle course and an archery area. The “8 super ziplines” are a highlight, one of which is 180 meters long and is the longest and highest in Catalonia. The park is open all year, Monday to Sunday, but be sure to reserve before.

Shopping for wine at Vinum

Before you say goodbye to Porrera, be sure to visit the Vinum winery in Plaça Catalunya. Here you can pick up some bottles of DOQ Priorat wine at the best price. Try before you buy and listen to expert explanations and advice on the best bottle for you. We highly recommend the wines from the cellar Fills de la Llicorella such as Cor de Pedra or Cassanella.
