🎭 Tortosa Renaissance Festival 2025: a journey into the splendour of the 16th century

From 17th to 20th July, Tortosa will transform itself to host one of the most spectacular historical festivals in Catalonia. The city will be decked out to welcome the 28th edition of the Renaissance Festival, a unique event bringing together more than 59 historical re-enactment groups from eight countries, turning the historic centre into a grand stage filled with music, performances and food.

This year, the programme boasts over 450 activities and 132 show slots, record-breaking figures that consolidate Tortosa as a European benchmark for historical re-enactment. Here’s everything you’ll find to help you make the most of this unmissable cultural experience:

A historic centre brimming with life

For four days, Tortosa will relive its Renaissance heyday with camps of craftsmen and soldiers, craft markets and taverns recreated just as they were five centuries ago. Dozens of streets and squares will become stages where local guilds, brotherhoods and companies of artists from all over Europe come together.

Every corner will pulse with unique shows: flagbearers deftly spinning their flags, knights clashing in equestrian jousts, musicians playing ancient melodies and comedians raising smiles from the crowds.

The Renaissance Festival is also a unique chance to savour the most authentic flavours of Tortosa. Over twenty themed taverns will be serving tapas, dishes and wines inspired by 16th-century recipes along the Saboga Route. Meanwhile, several restaurants will offer special menus within the Mengeu de Festa proposal, with dishes prepared using local produce and a creative twist. Popular spots with locals like Botànic, Lo Racó de Mig Camí or Matadero are some of the places where you can enjoy this unique gastronomic experience. If you’d like to know where to eat, what to try and which places to visit to round off your stay, we recommend reading our article dedicated to restaurants and food experiences in Tortosa.

Lo Sirgador, the traditional wooden boat of Tortosa.

All year round, Tortosa offers experiences and activities that take on a special charm during the Renaissance Festival. You can sail the river Ebre on Lo Sirgador cruises, wander the old town and the Reials Col·legis, discover history through guided tours, or explore the Cathedral and its Renaissance choir stalls. You can also enjoy cultural and nature outings around the Castle of La Suda or along the Via Verda of the Val de Zafán. All this heritage and landscape is magnified by the magic of the festival, making Tortosa a destination worth experiencing and rediscovering any time of year.

After reviewing the programme, the new features and all the activities on offer, it’s clear that the Renaissance Festival is much more than a cultural event: it’s a unique experience that lets you immerse yourself in the city’s historical splendour. Don’t miss the highlights of this edition: Thursday’s solemn opening and proclamation, Friday and Saturday’s nights of fire and performances, and Sunday’s Grand Parade and fireworks to round off four unforgettable days
