My getaway to L’Hospitalet de l’Infant

by JESSICA BERGIN

On my recent journey to the Costa Daurada, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I knew that I needed a break from bustling Barcelona, and an adventure was calling my name. So, I escaped buzzing city life and traded it in for the turquoise-hued waters and fringing finds in Hospitalet and Vall de Llors. I had no expectations, and boy, was I surprised!

Upon arrival, I headed straight to the tourist office by the Castell and picked up a a Mapilife guide. Just when I thought living in Spain can’t get any better, I discovered the world of whimsical opportunities in this lyrical landscape. From the crashing coastline and honey-coloured villages to the monumental castle and the quaint towns, this sprightly spot immediately grasped my attention. It’s safe to say I fell in love with this picturesque part of Catalonia!

“L’Hospitalet de l’Infant really is one of the region’s hidden gems”

Framed with hidden coves, hefty hiking trails and postcard-worthy beaches, this is a destination that’s worth adding to your bucket list. Melded with a Mediterraean flair, L’Hospitalet de l’Infant really is one of the region’s hidden gems. Carved with contrasts of both the mountain and sea, you’ll find a collection of charming cultural attractions.

cultural Attractions

Among the array of awe-worthy attractions, the Gothic Castle is renowned for giving the town it’s name. Constructed by Infant Pere in 1344, the Gothic Hospital poses postcard-worthy vistas that’ll sweep you off your feet. Pinned as a former meeting point for pilgrims, nomads, and all those alike, the Gothic Castle upholds utmost historical significance.

Nowadays, it serves as a scenic spot to indulge in the idyllic area’s most astounding views. After more than half a decade living in Spain, I can honestly say that this town sits high up on my list of favourites. Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll discover a network of of enchanting finds. From the Romanesque church in Masriudoms to the hefty mountain biking trails, there’s a fantastic fusion of activities.

Among the handful of highlights, don’t miss Masboquera, Fatxes, Castelló, and Gavadà. Magnified by Mediterranean scenery, misty mountain tops, and adrenaline-fuelled adventure, L’Hospitalet de l’Infant oozes charm. And coming from a country like Australia that’s brimming with beautiful beaches, I’m honestly impressed by the sublime, splash-worthy scene too.

Teeming with transparent waters, this idyllic spot is home to a huge haul of beaches. Fringed with fine sand, tranquil vibes and less crowds than the more popular beaches, this is definitely a must-see for any beach enthusiast. Go swimming at Arenal, soak up the sun at Punta del Riu and enjoy the warm weather at Almadrava. If you’re eager to take it all off, head to Torn which is a nonpareil nudist beach. If you’re after an adrenaline-infused activity, take advantage of the water sports scene around the Port. Otherwise, get off the beaten track at the Llop Marí Cave. As one of the Catalan coast’s mosst captivating finds, this is a bucket-list-item for any avid adventurer!

Even if you’re someone who doesn’t love to get active, there’s undoubestly something for you. From the beating heart of Plaça Catalunya, jump aboard the tourist train! Wind through the maze-like streets on the circular route through the town and discover hidden gems along the way. When I visited, the summer temperatures were absolutely scorching, so this activity was an ideal way of seeing more, while doing less.

Vall de Llors is lapped by luminescent landscapes, from charming rural villages to history-ridden streets. There are many different excursions into the depths of the dazzling mountain tops, offering travellers he chance to get off the typical tourist trail. Personally, I love exploring, exercise and getting away from the crowds.

Living in Barcelona for the past 5 years has really made me appreciate nature, and this spot had me head over heels. I thoroughly enjoyed the guided route of the bunkers, which lead me to breathtaking views. To get a glimpse of rural living, get your heart rate up on this picture-perfect route! Seeing the age-old spots from the Civil War filled me with a sense of awe, so if you’re a history buff, this is definitely worth it!

GASTRONomy

If there’s one thing that Spain is known for, it’s the mouth-watering cuisine. But that’s one of the areas where Catalunya really differentiates itself. Carved with drool-worthy plates and seafood-rich dishes, there’s no doubt you’ll be leaving Hospitalet de l’Infant in a food coma. Literally. Relish in the flavours of the teeming tapas dishes and lock lips with some of the region’s world-class wines.

Indulge in a Valencian-style paella, savour the saltiness of the classic jamón ibérico and enjoy the collection of Catalan cheeses. Whether you want to keep it classy in a restaurant or soak up the ocean breeze at a beach clubs like Rosarito Café on Arneal beach, there is something to satisfy everyone.

As a vegetarian, sometimes finding plant-based food can be a challenge. But I must say that I was surprised at how much luck I had when visiting Hospitalet and Vall de Llors. From the traditional crispy potatoes to the homemade vegetable-inspired plates, the gastronomy scene was steeped deep in opportunities.

Activities & entertainment

If you want to mix things up, there’s an array of activities and entertainment too. Of course, the Gothic Hospital of ‘Coll de Balaguer’ is a must-see, topped by the bliss-inducing beaches and history-rich towns. But on top of that, you’ll be surprised at the depth of diversity on offer.

One of the highlights from my trip was the guided visit to Molí de Vandellòs. At the Oil Interpretation Center, we took a tour of the old Vandellòs oil mill. You can discover the myriad of machinery and tools, as well as see the meticulous production process too. As someone who loves to drench every plate in oil, seeing the process first-hand made me appreciate it even more.

There are many different activities and events to discover, but I didn’t have time to see them all. There’s no doubt I’ll be back to snorkel in Cova de Llop Marí, see the magic of the stars with El Pessebre dels Estels and experience the atmosphere of the Medieval Market in mid-September.

practical information

The best time to visit Hospitalet and Vall de Llors depends highly on your travel style, budget and personal preferences. Generally speaking, the best time to visit is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October). During these seasons, you can bask in pleasant weather and budget-friendly prices. If you want to enjoy the beaches in their full splendour, the summertime (June to August) is obviously a top pick.

All in all, I cannot express how special this postcard-worthy part of Catalonia is. Etched with ethereal scenery, all-enticing adventure and crystal clear beaches, Hospitalet and Vall de Llors is one of my all-time favourite spots in the history-ridden region. If you’re planning a visit to Spain, add this awe-worthy area to your travel bucket list!
